15 Details Pixar And Disney Changed For Different Countries

Everyone knows that Disney and Pixar like to go the extra mile. Since the first Toy Story movie, Pixar has been upping the ante with each new film all the way to Disney+’s Luca. One of the ways Disney goes the extra mile is to alter their movies for international audiences. The company has spent decades cultivating a passionate international audience and maybe these personal touches are the secret to their success.

Sometimes these changes can be very small. One character getting a name change isn’t that big a deal. Then there’s the case where movies like Moana and Coco both had to have their titles changed just because those titles reminded different countries of something very inappropriate for a Disney movie. Other times the animators will go the extra mile to translate every bit of text to fit the country the movie is premiering in. Sometimes they will even recast a role or completely rewrite a character so that a minor player in a Cars movie could land better in other countries. Sometimes these changes will actually be better than the original version. The international cupcakes Randall makes in Monsters University are much better than the American cupcakes. The infamous dream jar from that one brutally sad scene from Up had a fun drawing for international audiences that I think is much better than the “Paradise Falls” label American audiences got.
