From the dogs of The Wizard of Oz through to the rats of James Gunn’s latest hit, the legacy of Hollywood is as much a history of canines, felines, ursines and rodents as it is a history of human beings, CGI spectacle and song and dance numbers. If anything, a realistic performance from a cat or a monkey is more impressive than the most penetrating Method acting from a Marlon Brando or a Daniel Day-Lewis. Somebody had to teach the James Gunn superhero movie non-mice to do those moves. You ever think about that? Whether it’s Disney, Marvel, DC, Warner Bros or 20th Century Fox, there’s always a trainer lurking behind the cute non-human sidekicks, tirelessly waving a treat on a string or whispering SIT.

Not only is it notable when a companion from the natural world gives a compelling account of themselves in the theatre - often it overshadows the bipedal carbon based homo sapiens around them! Whether that’s because of charisma or cuteness, we can’t deny it - sometimes we’d just rather be watching the little dudes with the feathers and whiskers and tails.
