You laugh, but that’s exactly what happened to Wizard of Oz, which was a big flop commercially when it was released and now is considered one of the greats. So here’s hoping for a Lone Ranger revaluation in 10 years! Hmm, maybe not. I’m just saying, this sort of thing happens all the time. A movie that was a big flop at one point suddenly takes on a new life and becomes super popular with critics and audiences. And today’s list is highlighting some of the biggest examples of this utterly strange phenomenon.

Like did you know The Shawshank Redemption, one of the best prison movies ever, which currently holds the top spot in IMDb’s top-rated movies of all time, was a huge box office disappointment when it was released? Or did you know that David Fincher’s classic Fight Club, which has one of the best twists in cinema history and is a huge part of pop culture today, failed to make a dent at the box office and was lambasted by critics for its release? Or what about Citizen Kane? That’s right. The film that’s widely regarded as one of the most important and best films ever made to this day, didn’t gain popularity until about 10 years after it debuted and failed at the box office.
