The world of Disney is so iconic and so memorable, it’s hard to see it any other way, particularly in relation to its beloved characters. Characters like Aladdin, Woody from Toy Story, Elsa from Frozen and the Beast from Beauty and the Beast are part of the cultural lexicon. Their looks are iconic; they’re instantly recognizable nearly all over the globe. But did you know that some of these characters were originally intended to look much different from their final versions? Some dramatically so.

When you start to delve behind the scenes of a number of Disney’s animated productions, you’ll discover a treasure trove of information regarding what might have been. For instance, did you know Elsa was originally supposed to be completely evil? This was changed later on to make her and Anna sisters. Iago, Jafar’s pet parrot from Aladdin, was originally supposed to have a British accent and be a bit more sophisticated, like a butler. The Beast was supposed to be much scarier and Gaston was supposed to be a bit more prim and proper, an upstanding gentleman. One of the most shocking changes of all is Woody, the lovable cowboy from Toy Story. Did you realize he was originally supposed to be a total jerk? He was basically the villain of the story!

There are plenty more incredible differences where that came from. Let’s take a look at a few Disney characters that bear the most striking differences from how they started to how they ended up.
