Family Guy might be a beloved show, but we’re willing to bet even its most devoted fans will admit Peter and Lois Griffin have a pretty messed up relationship. Throughout the years, they’ve stuck by one another through thick and thin, forgiving and forgetting countless times, and relying on love to get them through. But in some instances, the things they’ve put each other through reveal a darker, more disturbing insight into their marriage.

Peter and Lois have tried to make things work with counseling, but Lois’s attempt to mend their problems with this method ends up backfiring on her. Lois’s sketchy past has thrown their marriage for a loop time and time again. Not only has she been thrown in prison, she has a reputation for getting around with famous rock stars. It doesn’t help that their infant son is constantly looking for new ways to murder his mother, or that Lois has been married to both the Griffins’ neighbor Quagmire and their dog Brian. Of course, Peter’s brief fling with former President Bill Clinton (not to mention his affair with a cardboard cutout of Kathy Ireland) hasn’t helped anything. Their terrible parenting skills are unparalleled with Peter injecting his son with steroids in addition to Lois hooking up with Meg’s boyfriend. And then there’s the horrifying realization that all the stress Peter puts Lois through has ended up giving her a brain tumor.
