Who Are The Best Cinematic Bad Guys?

We all love a great film antagonist. Every cinemagoer, whether they grew up with Star Wars, the latest MCU Phase or the likes of 2001: A Space Odyssey, has their list of villains you agree with, or who are more interesting than the good guy. The kinds of moustache twirling scoundrels who light up the new Indiana Jones sequel, a James Bond reboot, a Doctor Who regeneration, or whatever new Marvel Cinematic Universe Disney+ trailer you care to name.

Indeed, ever since the beginnings of the silver screen, we have seen people turning to the dark side, as a counterpoint to the light side. Tying poor damsels to train tracks as in the black and white silent era shorts, sabotaging theatrical trailers in the heyday of the big Hollywood musical, all the way forwards to the neo noir thrillers of the 1990s, the Matrix and beyond. Whether there is a protagonist, there must be an ultimate nemesis.
