Superheroes are everywhere. On your cinema screen (in a normal year, that is), on your streaming services, on your PS5 or Xbox. Your two-year-old cousin will probably know how to say “Hulk Smash” before he can say your name.

But what makes a superhero? Is it the superhuman abilities, derived from extraterrestrial or mystical means - or perhaps from pure determination? Is it the tragic background? The cave full of gadgets? The sidekick?

Or is it the threads?

From the very first, iconic comic book costumes, based on the flamboyant attire of circus strongmen, flashy outfits have been a key element of any self-respecting superhero’s armory. Capes, tights, horns, bright colors - always memorable, always impractical, are they even a superhero without their ensemble? Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Avengers, the Fantastic Four - out of uniform, they’re (mostly) just ordinary people.

But while it’s one thing for comic book characters to sport these dubious fashion choices, it’s quite another for live-action incarnations. While the modern landscape of Disney+, HBO Max and wall-to-wall superhero programming might suggest otherwise, traditional superhero costumes have had a slightly fraught journey to the screen, with some living up to fan expectations and some...very much not doing that. After all, let’s not forget that there was nearly a decade between the first X-Men movie and the inauguration of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2008.
