You know, one of the most under-discussed parts of Avatar: The Last Airbender is the directing and animating of the big epic fights and battles. I want to rectify that today with a list of the best action in the show.

Of course, there are minor conflicts like the invasion of the Southern Water Tribe and The Swamp Monster skirmish. Even Aang dueling Bumi and Katara fighting Pakku is small stakes compared to some of the list entries. One thing grounds them all together, though: they all work perfectly in tandem with the larger narrative.

While gigantic battles aren’t uncommon in the show. Every bit of action tends to serve a greater purpose. They mark betrayals, realizations, growth, and opportunity for so many characters in the show. Just think how much Sokka developed from the Battle of the Drill to the Invasion of the Fire Nation. Every one of these fights mattered, and that’s part of what makes them epic.

Face it, we live to see Azula take on Zuko in Agni Kai. I’ll watch that fight any day!

The entire journey culminates in the Battle of Wulong Forest, where Aang takes on Fire Lord Ozai. Every battle is building to a larger battle because that’s how war works. The show writers do an excellent job of matching the micro-story of Aang’s ascent towards becoming the Avatar to the macro-story of the Fire Nation’s siege of the Earth Kingdom. They do this through action.
