Nothing screams corporate synergy like a reference to the company that owns you, as Marvel has demonstrated multiple times throughout their cinematic output. Whether it’s Ulton singing “I’ve Got No Strings” from Pinnochio, Yondu saying “I’m Mary Poppins, y’all!” or more obscure stuff like Giant Man’s fall in Civil War doubling as both an Empire Strikes Back and Brave Little Tailor nod, there’s just a whole heck of a lot of little mouse-eared details to pick up on throughout this massive franchise. In this video we’ve picked just fifteen, with a few — like our interpretation of Kurt’s “In like Flynn” line — perhaps being speculation. But hey, it’s mildly educated speculation. And it’s peppered with awful jokes, just like you always wanted! Right? … Right?

Since we’ve already done a video on Star Wars references in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this video is excluding those films. However, other Disney-owned properties are certainly up for grabs, and that goes doubly for Pixar films. Wall-E, the beautiful story of two robots and the inevitable fall of man to capitalist greed, is referenced in the best Iron Man movie, Iron Man 3, with Tony Stark saying his robot arm’s name out loud: “Dum-E”. Technically that was its name all along, but Iron Man 3 just came out and said it.

One of the most haunting uses of a Disney reference occurs in Age of Ultron, and even made the trailer. This is of course the song “I’ve Got No Strings” from the 1940 Disney classic Pinnochio — another film about a man-made “puppet” given sentience. A little less worldwide destruction — but he did survive getting swallowed by a whale and getting turned into a donkey.
