20 movies that caused real-life danger to make

The Silver Screen can be a meat grinder sometimes. Usually we’re all unaware of mishaps in the final release. Wide eyed, just like Malcolm McDowell’s re-education scene from A Clockwork Orange, we’re hooked on entertainment. Behind the scenes, however, there has been a lot of calamity! It’s not surprising, especially in fast paced action flicks. Mad Max 2 was a glorified smash up derby. Jackass: The Movie and all of Jackie Chan’s vehicles were promoted as irresistible car wrecks. Super Size Me heart clogging view into society’s addiction to fast food. And Roar flirted a little too closely with Africa’s most dangerous predators. Are these people in their right minds? The answer depends on a lot of factors. The Wizard of Oz was shot in a time when there were not strong unions representing actors. Buddy Ebson, The Tin Man, nearly died from his aluminum dust make-up. Then there’s John Wayne’s laughable role as Genghis Khan, in The Conqueror, and production took place one hundred miles south of a US military nuclear testing site. Ninety-one cast and crew members suffered from cancer years later. Comedies aren’t exempt either. A stuntman nearly lost his head in a car scene in The Hangover 2. These are all calculated risks because Murphy’s Law doesn’t play favorites. But if a director pushed the envelope too far people can, and have died. Exemplified in The Twilight Zone: The Movie, directed by John Landis, when Vic Morrow and two child extras were cut down by a fatal helicopter accident.
