After a half century of tireless experimentation, innovation, and iteration it has become clear, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that video games offer three primary strengths as a medium when compared against other forms of entertainment/narrative media like fiction, film, or theater: First, games offer the player an experiential window into the action that is active rather than passive. We watch the hero go into the scary house in a horror film or ghost story, whereas in Resident Evil it is us ourselves who must be brave and enter. Second, games provide the best raw expressive mode with which to experiment with failure. By having multiple ‘lives’ or resetting levels, video games let the user try and try again until they improve, whereas few films or novels require such improvement to proceed through them. Third, however, is the strength of gaming which concerns us here today: Video games invite active exploration on multiple axes through the coexistence of large worlds and easter eggs and secrets.

There are countless examples of wildly well-hidden surprises tucked away in our favorite games, though today we will focus on only twenty-five of the finest: Master Chief’s autographed bullets, the Portal series Rattman dens, American McGee’s Psychonauts shout-out, and all manner of other entertaining secrets you might have missed (or forgotten about) since you last picked up a controller to play.
