A celebration of those who are truly different from the rest of us and who, according to a ten-year study, are healthier, happier and tend to live longer. The film examines how and why “dancing to the beat of our own drum” is good for us.

Academy award winning director, John Zaritsky, a bit of an oddball himself, ventures on a quest across the US, UK and Canada to find people who choose to colour outside the lines. Through him we are introduced us to a cast of weird and wonderful characters who celebrate being out of sync with society’s norms, and enjoy many freedoms that most of us can only envy.

The documentary investigates why eccentrics seem to be physically and psychologically better off than the rest of us and in doing so challenges the perspectives of ‘normal behavior’. John takes us on a journey into another way of living and join, among others, Daniel Suelo who lives productively and happily without using money from his home base, a cave in Utah; Dr. Darla Shaw, a university professor who gives ghost tours in her home town; Gary Holloway, who dresses like a Franciscan monk and is president of the Martin Van Buren Club; Lord Toby Jug, member of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party, a legitimate political party in the UK; and Laura Kay Prophet, known as The Duck Lady, who doubles as a psychic and philanthropist
