Whatever Happened To The Caped Crusader?

Did you know that the Dark Knight is nearly 100 years old? Well. 83. But still, that’s pretty impressive. And ever since he made his debut back in 1939, in Issue 27 of Detective Comics, the billionaire orphan turned high-tech hero has been captivating audiences of all ages. Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, he’s appeared in more TV shows, video games, comic books, big budget movies and board games than practically any other superhero, from DC or Marvel.

And now he returns to our screens in The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves, mastermind behind Cloverfield, Let Me In, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes. Starring Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Colin Farrell and Paul Dano, this is a grim and gritty take that will out-dark even Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy.

But of course, those aren’t the only takes on the World’s Greatest Detective that we’ve seen over the years. From Adam West to Michael Keaton, from Val Kilmer to George Clooney and Ben Affleck, there has been a version of the Bat to suit practically every mood. Comedy, tragedy, grounded and realistic, we’ve been spoiled for choice. And within that, we’ve seen plenty of different takes on his iconic rogue’s gallery, his best friends and the other supporting characters from the comics.
