With so many Marvel movies out today, and coming out in the near future, it’s kind of hard to remember a time when superhero movies didn’t completely dominate the worldwide box office. Sure, we always had Batman and Superman movies being made and remade, but it wasn’t always a straightforward way to stardom like joining the MCU is today. But even so, there were always movies being made about superheroes, and pseudo-superheroes that just kind of slipped through the cracks. And they even featured tons of huge stars. Today we’re taking a look at a handful of times that big celebs took on superhero roles that we then promptly forgot about. Like how about a pre-Green Lantern and definitely pre-Deadpool Ryan Reynolds, who starred as the imaginary Captain Excellent in the indie movie Paper Man. Or how about Will Smith’s turn as the unlikeliest of heroes in Hancock? There was The Spirit, a Frank Miller follow up to Sin City that features an insane cast, and Dredd, which starred Karl Urban and is actually one of the best comic book movies ever made. Woody Harrleson took to the streets as Defendor, Rainn Wilson played the vigilante Crimson Bolt in James Gunn’s black comedy Super, and Alec Baldwin did something altogether bonkers in The Shadow. Ben Stiller and a great supporting cast took aim at the entire genre in Mystery Men, and it may be better today than it was when it first came out!
