Godzilla and King Kong are undoubtedly two of the biggest Monsters to ever appear on-screen, in both a literal sense and in an iconic sense. So it’s no surprise that in 2021, almost 60 years after the first (and only other) time they went head to head, Godzilla and Kong earned top spot at the box office, despite their being a global pandemic. While the movie will never be seen as a narrative masterpiece, it was a great level of escapism that was so desperately needed and fans had great relief at watching two massive titans go toe to toe for two hours. But how exactly did both Kong and Godzilla become so iconic and emblematic? How did they become some of the biggest monsters of all time amongst a sea of other monsters? And how did they ever come to be in the first place? Well, in this video we will at least try and answer that last question.

We will take a look at the surprising inspirations behind the world’s biggest monsters and how real events and global catastrophes led to their existence. From the fallout of World War II and a country’s deep seeded fear leading to the creation of one, to a global recession and lack of resources leading to the creation of another - this is the inspiration behind the titans of cinema - Godzilla and King Kong.
