Harry Potter Without CGI

While not all of the VFX and visual magic holds up in the series (and in some places falls deep into the uncanny valley), for the most part the CGI in the Harry Potter series is spellbinding and the franchise were one of the biggest pioneers in the industry when it came to what you can do on camera. As you can imagine though bringing to life massive magic battles, mythical creatures such as basilisks, giants and house elves, or an enchanted castle is not exactly easy and it took the visual effects team a great amount of effort to pull it off. While the end product is certainly a sight to behold, the images before the use of CGI are rather less impressive, but you can’t help but look at them!

In this video, we are going to take a look at a number of scenes, creatures and places before VFX was used on them and how they looked during filming. From the final battle with Voldemort and his Death Eaters, the Chamber of the Secrets and the monster that lives inside it, the creepy but loveable thestrals, the Ministry of Magic, the home of witchcraft and wizardry in Hogwarts, to some of our favorite characters in the series. This is Harry Potter before CGI!
