Euphoria is an Primetime Emmy award-winning series with one season under its belt, two new episodes set to air, and a delayed second season getting ready to shoot in 2021. The show deals with all sorts of issues plaguing Gen Z teenagers, from bullying to gender identity to the opioid epidemic. It’s a show that is not for everyone and contends with these problems head on. If you’re looking for an especially subtle or family-friendly exploration of today’s high schoolers… Euphoria is not the show for you. However, in this video essay we’d like to make the case for Euphoria not only being an important and artistically triumphant teen drama, but also that it’s basically reinventing the idea of teen drama television. It stars Disney Channel and Spider-Man star Zendaya, trans rights activist and model Hunter Schafer, Kissing Booth star Jacob Elordi, and model Barbie Ferreira. The cast is rounded out by actors Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie, Storm Reid, Maude Apatow, Angus Cloud, Algee Smith, and Eric Dane, among many more very talented individuals. It was created by Sam Levinson, son of director Barry Levinson, and digs deep into his own history of drug abuse. Fun for the whole family! Maybe!
