Raya And The Last Dragon Changed Hollywood Forever

Raya and the Last Dragon is a unique film in the Disney library in many, many ways. I’m not sure I can recall a Disney film with as many choreographed fight sequences, especially direct hand-to-hand combat. It was very entertaining to see! But of course, with any film, there’s always more going on behind the scenes than what we see. And Raya and the Last Dragon is no exception. Raya and the Last Dragon takes influence from many, many south-east Asian cultures, and mixes them all together to create a unique but similar feeling. Whether that was successful however will vary depending on the viewer. What is important however, is that this was a step forward toward acknowledging another set of cultures that doesn’t often get represented in Hollywood, even if done so indirectly. And hopefully it’s a step forward to allowing their stories to be told in the future.

Raya is played by Kelly Marie Tran of Star Wars fame, and the dragon Sisu is played by Awkwafina. Both turn in an excellent performance, especially considering every one had to record their lines remotely without the other cast members! This film's production was entirely done during the COVID-19 pandemic, and as a result, was largely done remotely. This is monumental as this had never been done before! This lead to some humorous results for the actors, as you’ll see in the video, including failing to record an entire segment of dialogue. Tragically, these are the risks we face when relying on others to record on our behalf.
