What Are Loki’s Biggest Visual Influences?

We’ve had WandaVision and its whistle-stop tour through classic sitcom looks and tropes. We’ve had The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and its street-level explosions and urban warfare. And now we’re in the thick of the latest Disney+ streaming offering from the Marvel Cinematic Universe - the frankly mind-blowing time travel shenanigans of Loki.

As arresting as the show’s concepts are its visuals, particularly the depiction of the Time Variance Authority, which differs strikingly from its more austere portrayal in the Marvel comics. The TV show’s visuals take their cues from all sorts of classic movies, TV shows, books and comics, combining retro-futuristic tech, 1960s and 1970s colors, German expressionism through a sci-fi lens, and a tongue-in-cheek cosmic approach to bureaucracy. It’s a huge melting pot, and it’s a credit to director Kate Herron, costume designer Christine Wada and production designer Kasra Farahani that they manage to combine all of these wide-ranging influences into a cohesive and coherent whole.

In this video, we’re going to be taking a look at a bunch of these influences - some of which the production team have explicitly said they used, some of which have occurred to us as we’ve been watching the show. What are the classic sci-fi movies that the team have drawn upon for their designs? Which recent TV shows might have had a cheeky influence?
