Way back in the year 1999, in the dim and distant past - in the last century, no less - the Wachowski sisters brought us The Matrix, a mashup of Hong Kong action cinema, science fiction, philosophy and goth punk fashion like nothing anybody had ever seen before. Overnight, the landscape for action and science fiction storytelling changed.

And now, over twenty years - and two flawed but fascinating sequels - later, the series is back, with The Matrix 4, written and directed by Lana Wachowski (with co-writing credits for David Mitchell and Aleksander Hemon. We know very little about this mysterious and massively hyped sequel, apart from those creative credits, and the fact that original stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will be returning, alongside new characters played by the likes of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra, and Jessica Henwick.

The marketing for the original Matrix informed us that nobody could be told what the Matrix is, that we would have to see it for ourselves. That probably holds true for the fourth instalment, but of course that hasn’t stopped the internet exploding with outlandish theories about where Lana Wachowski could take the story. This video looks at five of the most potentially compelling theories - from when the story could be set, to who the characters could be, to what version of the Matrix we might see - and asks how likely they are.
