Dark creators Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar have come back around with another reality bending mind warping mystery of a series, this time aboard an immigrant ship at the turn of the century and its encounter with an enigmatic ghost ship in the Netflix series 1899. Themes like missing children and recurring three point symbols that were present in Dark make their way into the new mystery complete with a machine of unknown purpose that is clearly mucking about with what is real or not. Sporting a cast and crew from across Europe, Germany’s most expensive tv show has made a big splash debut on Netflix which hopefully saves it from Netflix’s hair trigger cancel button. Just like Dark, 1899 is littered with references and nods to suggest to the viewers and characters alike that nothing is quite what it seems. For 1899 that takes the form of Greek and Egyptian mythology as well as heavy doses of Aristotle and Plato. The show takes pains to explain Plato's Allegory of the Cave that demonstrates how perception can create a false assumption of reality. Less overtly are references to mythology revolving around the afterlife including the name Kerberos, the three headed dog that keeps the dead in the underworld, Prometheus who brought man fire only to be tortured for eternity for his efforts and possibly even an allusion to Charon, the boatman who brings souls to the afterlife.
