When The Walking Dead premiered in 2010, viewers were quick to point out that the show’s titular monsters were never referred to as “zombies,” the go-to descriptor for anyone who’s ever seen a zombie movie. Robert Kirkman, the co-creator of the comic series that AMC based its show on, told Conan O’Brien in 2016 that he wanted The Walking Dead to exist in a universe without George A. Romero, one in which “zombies” never made an appearance in pop culture.

Since The Walking Dead’s “walkers” exist in their own, unique universe, the rules that might typically apply to zombies don’t necessarily work for them. So what can and can’t they do? These are the rules every walker has to follow in The Walking Dead.
