Description

Denis Villenueve's "Dune" — or more specifically, "Dune: Part One" — is a remarkable accomplishment in worldbuilding on film. Frank Herbert's dense sci-fi novel is full of place names, lore, and lingo that would be completely unfamiliar to many filmgoers, and the movie works handily to guide the unfamiliar into its weird, deadly desert world.

Many aspects of "Dune's" worldbuilding go uncommented upon by the movie itself, from the prominence of swordplay in the combat to the complete lack of traditional computers in this futuristic sci-fi world. There's also the bullish history of House Atreides, and the meaning behind Paul's visions and the different cultures of Arrakis. If you're ready to go deeper into the desert, check out these small details you missed in "Dune."
