Most of us revere Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining as one of the greatest scary movies ever made. But there are some people who really don’t like the movie, one of the most famous of which is Stephen King himself. That’s right, the author of the original novel seriously hates The Shining movie, so much so that he even went on to make his own, more accurate miniseries in the 1990’s! He disliked the movie for a number of reasons, starting with all of the creative changes that Kubrick made to the story. In the novel, there is no hedge maze, but a garden full of giant topiary animals that come to life and taunt Jack as he loses his mind. Danny’s friend Tony actually appears before him as a teenage boy, and it turns out that he is actually Danny from the future using his shine to try and help his younger self. Some iconic moments like the creepy elevator, the ghost twin girls, the “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy” scene, and the iconic Here’s Johnny moment all never happened in the book! But the biggest problem King had was with how Kubrick changed the characters of Jack and Wendy. The way he wrote those two in the book could not be more different from the interpretation in the film, and they really change the entire tone of the movie!
