Set in a dark, post-apocalyptic future where zombie-like monsters and ruthless marauders harass survivors in equal measure, The Last of Us, Part Two shows us a morally ambiguous world where human life is never truly cheap and where violence and revenge can all too easily become a way of life. The ending of 2020’s Playstation 4 blockbuster may be a rumination on loss, trauma, vengeance, and what it takes to forgive, forget, and break cycles of violence, but it left plenty of players guessing about what would come next for the world’s only known immune woman, Ellie. Left broken, alone, and unfulfilled by her quest to avenge her surrogate father, the game leaves us with no small ambiguity about just where Ellie will go next and what she will do.

Recently though, writers Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross went on the Script Apart podcast and told listeners about an alternate way that the game almost ended… One that could have made things a little less opaque and given fans all around the world a greater clue about what comes next. In this video, we’ll talk about the ending as it stands, what the alternate ending would have changed, and just what it might mean for the game’s themes and star character.
