Martin Scorcese has brought together a trio of all-time mafia movie royalty for his new movie. He’s brought Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro together in one movie for the first time ever. He’s also used de-aging technology to an extent until now, turning De Niro and Pesci into awkward, but still-impressive younger versions of themselves.

But it’s not all these firsts that are the most interesting things about this video. What we’re concerned with today is the factual basis for the movie and whether or not it is just that, factual.

The movie follows De Niro as Frank Sheeran and Joe Pesci as Russell Bufalino as they drive to Detroit on a secret mission to assassinate the famous union boss Jimmy Hoffa. The disappearance of Hoffa has remained a mystery since the day it happened in 1975. There are countless conspiracy theories surrounding it that lead to two different American presidents. There are also dozens of people who have claimed responsibility for ending Hoffa’s life. Frank Sheeran is only one of them.

The movie is based on a book called I Hear You Paint Houses, which is a death-bed interview with Sheeran. In the book he describes his version of events and positions himself as high-level mafia hit-man who has taken out somewhere between 25 and 30 people over the years. A lot of people have cast serious doubt on this version of events, especially after the release of the movie. So, today, we’ll be trying to figure out exactly what is true and what is false.
