From lavish production costs to high-priced talent (we're looking at you cast of Friends and The Big Bang), it's no wonder these shows cost millions to make, and that number keeps growing every year, with every new streaming service vying for your attention.

Fifty years ago, the landscape was quite different. Large budgets were only for movies. Television was the domain of cheap, easy-to-produce programs shot on simple sets and studio backlots.
