Two years before directing the summer blockbuster Independence Day, Roland Emmerich helmed 1994’s Stargate, a sci-fi action flick about a group of scientists and soldiers who travel through a literal star gate to a world trapped under the rule of an extraterrestrial overlord masquerading as the Ancient Egyptian sun god Ra.
