Free Guy: How Free City Was Created

Since it’s release Ryan Reynolds’ latest film has been a massive success, winning big at the Box Office and also getting it’s fair share of critical acclaim along the way. From its zany and offbeat humour, it’s refreshing world build and charismatic stars, it is a movie that is very easy to fall in love with. That’s why we wanted to go behind the scenes and provide an exclusive look behind the making of the film and all of the Visual FX magic that went into creating it.

We sat down with the Visual FX supervisor over at Digital Domain, Nikos Kalaitzidis, who has over 20 years of experience in the industry and along with Titanic, Spider-Man: Homecoming and the upcoming Black Adam, worked extensively on the movie. He provided us with an exclusive insight into the process of building the world, from capturing live action photography, to making near photoreal gameplay effects. He also gave us insight into some of the greatest sequences of the game such as the construction site scene, the moment the game resets and the insane opening one shot take. He also told us about some of the groundbreaking Visual FX and technology they used to help work on the movie including a relatively new concept called ‘data moshing’ along with a tool that mimics deepfake. We’ll also look into the real life video games and locations that served as visual reference for the movie. We’ll also provide the inside scoop as to what it was like to work on the film, and how the positive atmosphere and hilarious stars made for a brilliant and unique work environment. So get ready to re-enter the world of Free City, where chaos and carnage reign supreme, as we take a look at how the movie’s visuals came to be.
