For eleven seasons, Showtime’s hit comedy drama Shameless reveled in the debauched antics and intense drama of the Gallagher clan and their neighbors, foes, and extended family in Chicago’s South Side. Over the past decade, they have had more than enough time to grow together, fall apart, and change as people, but in a show that is all about destructive cycles of addiction, mental illness, and abuse, just how much change did Frank and his kids manage to pull off?

With so many characters intersecting and splitting apart on screen, Shameless gave us no shortage of dramatic shifts, shocking revelations, and shameless displays. While the youngest Gallaghers, Liam, Carl, and Debbie grew up on screen, Lip became his own man and fought to break the patterns of his father departure, Ian came to grips with his mental health and sexuality to find love in the least likely place, and Fiona struggled to find reclaim herself and split away from the family after being forced to raise her siblings. Things were never easy, and it wasn’t always easy to watch, but Shameless gave us a fascinating look at what showrunner John Wells called, “the people who live four blocks down from you and two blocks over.”

So, from Frank’s first monologue to his last—and his stubborn refusal to be anyone but himself along the way—we’re taking one last look at the Gallagher family and how they changed, broke down, and exploded from episode one to episode one-thirty-four.
