Twenty years ago, Ian McKellen had the kind of career that any Marvel Cinematic Universe actor would kill to have. The British thespian played both Gandalf in "Lord of the Rings" and Magneto in the "X-Men" trilogy in between his many appearances on the theatrical stage. Although McKellen is still an incredibly gifted actor who's continued to appear in smaller budget films and the cinematic adaptation of Cats in 2019, he hasn't been the ubiquitous presence that he was in the early 2000s.
