Marvel Actors Who Do Their Own Dangerous Stunts

Let’s face it, realism is not the superhero stock in trade. They’re an escape from reality to a world where the good guys are good even when they’re bad and the bad guys are bad unless someone redeems them or they become popular enough to turn into an anti-hero. It’s why we went decades with one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe running around in red Danskins. But when comic books make the leap from screen to page the audience has to ‘buy it’ even when it’s coo coo bananas stuff that’s happening. One of the ways to sell it is having the actor’s face as visible as possible during those death defying stunts. Seeing as they’re death defying, those are usually left to the pros. But for the ones that are merely broken bone defying, well it’s become a badge of honor for actors to step into the harnesses and do as much of their own stunts as possible. Some, like Simu Liu who plays Shang-Chi, had a head start having been a stunt performer before becoming the dreamy brother in Kim’s Convenience. Some, like Captain Marvel’s Brie Larson, didn’t know opting out was an option. But whether it’s Captain America’s Chis Evans throwing his mighty shield or Willem Defoe absorbing Spider-man punches with maniacal glee, having the actors in the scene certainly adds that little extra.
